Moved Firms? Treat Your New Colleagues Like Clients

Sometimes it's the obvious things that need to be said out loud; not because you don't already know them, but because there's value in hearing them with a bit of clarity.

When it comes to internal referrals and collaboration, one of the most impactful mindset shifts is treating your colleagues like clients. This matters most when you're starting at a new firm.

First impressions count. Once set, they're hard to shake. Three things that help you build relationships quickly:

  1. Listen. You've been sold a story about the firm - and even with the best intentions, it may differ slightly from what you find on the ground. Be prepared for some discovery, and adjust your narrative and strategy accordingly.

  2. Define. Have a clear narrative for your practice and where you're heading. If it's vague or unclear, it creates unnecessary uncertainty - and makes it harder for colleagues to see where they might benefit, or help.

  3. Value add. Think about the impact of your practice on each partner specifically. How could you be of value to them? What can you actually do that matters? Where is their real synergy?
