Clarity, Focus and Perspective
ABOUT STUART
I'm an internationally recognised coach working with partners and senior lawyers across the Magic Circle, Am Law 100, and other leading global law firms. I provide a confidential sounding board - giving you the clarity, focus and perspective to think more clearly about where you're going, and where you want to be.
“I engaged Stuart when I moved into a more senior leadership role... Stuart’s excellence, professionalism, humanity and empathy meant that there was no need or time for personal ego or noise to get in the way... and he was also able to provide invaluable insights with real examples to assist me in cutting through to what the real issues were, what was driving them, and how they might be tackled.”
WHY WORK WITH ME
I’ve worked with partners who have doubled their practice size, significantly improved their leadership and team performance, taken on global roles and moved firms; supported Heads of Practice who have successfully navigated a growth agenda and Managing Partners who have maintained their practice while overseeing massive change.
But at the heart of what I do is an understanding of law firms and the distinctive kind of pressure they can create. Growth is vital, but sticking to your values, working with colleagues and navigating the often-competing demands of a career and life outside work is so important.
WHY LAWYERS?
Partnership is run on collegiality and collaboration, but also competition and a constant need to influence rather than instruct. Law firm leadership isn't necessarily conferred by hierarchy either. It's earned, continually, through influence and credibility rather than title. That combination, the need for technical excellence, commercial responsibility, and leadership without formal authority, creates its own unique challenges.
I’m fascinated by the law firm business model and how you can thrive within it.
I’m not a lawyer which means I don't carry the hierarchy, the rivalries, or the professional instincts of the profession into the room with you. What I bring instead is an objective, outside view shaped by over a thousand coaching hours working closely with partners and firms worldwide.
My clients are highly intelligent and highly capable. What they often lack is time to reflect on their own terms. Too often your agenda gets set for you by clients, team challenges and the machinations of working in a law firm.
My work starts by creating that space. Then we use it: challenging assumptions, building the strategy that supports sustainable growth, and shifting you from reactive busy-ness toward deliberate, commercially grounded decision making, while navigating the dynamics of the firm.
I am based in London, and serve as an independent sounding board for partners across the UK, US, EU, APAC and Middle East. Book a confidential conversation to see whether we are a good fit.
legal industry initiative
I am the founder and host of the Global Industry Forum for Business Professionals in Law, an invite-only series drawing senior talent and L&D leaders from across the legal sector globally. Guest speakers have included Scott Westfahl and Heidi Gardner (Harvard Law School), Professor Michael Smets (Oxford Saïd Business School), and Mark Mortensen (INSEAD). I have also moderated leadership panels featuring Matthew Newick (Clifford Chance), Siân Keall (Travers Smith), and Claire Keast-Butler (Cooley).

A BIT MORE ABOUT ME
I'm pragmatic, occasionally idealistic, and love a good Oscar Wilde quote. What drives me is simple: a real interest in making a difference, often through small shifts that have a big impact.
I started out as an academic, until a bout of chronic illness in my early twenties forced a serious rethink of my priorities. It doesn't define me, but it shapes how I work. I take the fragility of time seriously, both in my own life and in how I coach.
