For law firm leaders, attention has always been a scarce resource. Where you focus your time dictates where your firm goes.
With AI promising unprecedented efficiency, the theory is that we’re all about to get a lot of time back. But right now, much of the time saved is spent trying to figure out how to use AI most effectively. The true efficiencies haven't fully landed yet.
And when they do, a bigger strategic question remains:
What do we actually do with the time we save?
Does efficiency mean we simply pack more volume into the day?
Or does it mean shifting what we focus on entirely?
If our only strategic goal is short-term efficiency, we miss something. Doing the same old tasks faster isn't a long-term advantage; it's just a temporary race to the bottom.
The real opportunity for law firm leaders isn't just doing more work - it’s doing different, higher-value work. It’s shifting our attention toward strategic growth, deeper client relationships, and how we better engage with our team whose roles are also changing.
Efficiency is the immediate race. Direction is the longer strategy.
How are you thinking about the time you might create with AI? Are you planning to do more, or to do differently?
